Diane’s Questionnaire

(sample questionnaire)

Here's how Diane answered her Debop Questionnaire

How many years young are you?

31

Where did you grow up?

Seoul & Long Island, NY

What was the first song you fell in love with?

This is a hard question - it may have been something classical as my mom was a pianist...

What's your occupation?

Corporate lawyer

What's your commute to work like?

Crowded Korean subway

What was the first album you fell in love with?

Celine Dion's "Let's Talk About Love" was the first CD I purchased with my own money from Borders (I moved to the US in 1995 and was too busy learning English to think about music/songs). I remember really liking that album.

What's your current state of mind?

Anxious about the future balanced with the need to live every day to the fullest. Feeling the need to belong somewhere/to someone. Homesick and confused with bursts of daily happiness in forms of food, small victories, and having some physical distance from some other real problems harvesting in the U.S.

Who are your favorite bands/artists now?

The Beatles, Zedd, Robin Thicke, Solange's "Losing You", Bruno Mars, Stan Getz, Joao Gilberto, The Weeknd, Maroon5, Carla Bruni, Ed Sheeran, Drake // Korean Artists: IU, 유재하, 장필순, 김건모, hyukoh (basically, indie feel or oldies)

What do you gravitate towards more - music, or lyrics?

Music - but if I find the lyrics relevant, I can be drawn to the music for the lyrics, too.

What changes have you noticed in your personality or sensibilities in the last 5 years?

I used to consider myself very unique, independent and strong - but having been in Korea for the last 5 years, I feel like I've become much more conformed to everything, and in certain ways, less confident about myself. Living in a country that doesn't really see difference and/or diversity as a strength, I think in a way, changed me. In terms of sensibilities, I've experienced a lot in terms of life, death, travels, and everything in between - so I've become much more aware of everything as it is the case with age.

Who were your favorite bands/artists during your teens (high school/college)?

Lifehouse, John Mayer, Norah Jones, Coldplay, Carla Bruni, The Beatles, Jason Mraz, Notorious B.I.G., Nas, Destiny's Child, Nelly, Human Nature, The Mamas & The Papas

Who are your favorite authors?

Harper Lee, J.D. Salinger, Plum Sykes, Ha Jin

Are there any genres or themes you'd like to explore in this playlist?

Love, Life, Happiness, Survival. I want to feel like I am in a Wong Kar Wai Film // the main character of a movie set in NYC // at home just relying on this playlist as I am at my desk looking for direction in life with candles in the room while I run the laundry.

Who’s an artist you recently discovered and loved?

SWV, Emeli Sande, Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers

In what environment do you rely on music the most?

Office when I am trying to tune out my coworkers; subway when I am commuting, at home when I am trying to focus.

What’s your main source for music discovery these days?

Apple Music / Mnet

And finally, what’s something totally random about you that not many people know?

I appear strong, confident and gutsy - but I am actually mushy and very delicate like the layers of Lady M crepe cake. I also have high blood pressure.
